Methods: Patients who were admitted to Chengdu Military General Hospital from January 2008 to December 2011 and clearly diagnosed as ARDS were analyzed retrospectively. (1) Screening strategies and processes: the original medical records of ARDS cases were brought up from the medical records library and screened in line with Berlin definition of ARDS in 2011, as well as the inclusion and exclusion criteria. (2) CRF was used to collect the information of each patient including the common information, vital signs, laboratory test results, predisposing factors, measures such as mechanical ventilation and anti-infective treatment, the survival rate, duration of ICU stay, medical costs and other indicators of all ARDS patients. All patients were evaluated with APACHE II and SOFA scores on the first day of ARDS. (3) The main indices in the study including: ①the duration of mechanical ventilation; ②the length of ICU stay; ③the average length of stay in hospital; ④ the 28-day survival; ⑤ the medical cost. (4) Data were summarized and statistically analyzed with SPSS16.0,and results were expressed as x ??SD . Count data were analyzed using X2 test, and measurement data using t test. P 0.05 was considered being statistically significant. Results: 117 ARDS patients were finally enrolled in the statistical analysis. The main results were as following: (1) the epidemiological characteristics of ARDS patients: 79 males and 38 females, male to female ratio 2.08:1. The lowest incidence of ARDS was in the age group of 19-29 years, the highest in the age group 60-75 years. The mean age of ARDS patients was 51.89 ± 13.92 years.
