II II Abstract In this paper, according to the neo-classical growth theory、the unbalanced development theory and the new economic geography, combined with Chinas reform and development of regional background, we provide two hypotheses postulate. Firstly, supposing that spatial polarization is conducive to Chinas economic growth, at the same time is also beneficial to the inter-regional convergence. Secondly, supposing spatial polarization will be gradually increased under the condition of the transportation costs reduction. And enhancing the efficiency of the elements of transport is a necessity of the development of market economy. Contrary to the law of polarized development measures may do harm to the efficiency of economic development. In order to verify these two assumptions , we constructed TW spatial polarization index panel data, and used the beta conditional convergence model, increased the TW control of variable, to do the empirical research and analysis. Finally we got the results from the empirical model: China’s economic region beta coefficient is significant; control space polarization indexthe beta coefficient will rise; TW polarization index and the squared term have a significant effect on economic growth, but the sign of coefficient values is opposite; transport costs indicators have a significantly positive effects to TW space polarization. The conclusions of this study as following: there exist regional convergence in Chinas economic growth, whether absolute convergence or conditional convergence; spatial polarization strongly accelerates the speed of convergence in the region, the polarization of the regions economic development into a U shaped trend and low levels of space and polarization hampers economic growth.
