Introduction Language activity is realized by listening, speaking, reading and writing, which are regarded as four basic skills in language teaching and learning. All the four skills can be employed to send and receive information in communication. But reading can deal with the greatest amount of information, therefore, it is much valued and widely used by teachers as a superior teaching method. People have different purposes when reading, but in order to reach their aims, they must understand what they read. So it is easy to say that the core of reading is to understand the meaning of what you read. But in actual teaching, teachers often find that the students are quite familiar with words and expressions, sentences structure and grammatical rules, but they still have difficulty in understanding the meanings of words and expressions, sentences, even the entire text. Students sometimes only pay attention to superficial meanings of words and phrases, but do not make use of context in reading, as a result, they only understand text partly. Obviously, reading comprehension is not meaning interpretation of single word. It inevitably involves the choice of the meaning of words and expressions in specific text, situation knowledge, co-text, and background knowledge. As a kind of new teaching theories, context theory is the improvement and development of traditional teaching method. Its effect on reading comprehension cannot be overlooked. To some degree, the failure to understand a text is due to the failure to understand relevant context. Starting from the definition and classification of context, the article analyzes context factors affecting reading comprehension—co-text context, intertextual context, situational context and cultural context; then illustrates in detail their roles in reading comprehension; and finally puts forward some advice on how to develop students’ abili
