A Brief Introduction to the Teaching of PronunciationEnglish Pronunciation is designed for non-native English speakers who wish to improve their spoken English. In this course, it teaches several different skills to help learners hear and then use correct tone, stress, and intonation in spoken English. Some students are very good at learning English pronunciation. They speak the language beautifully. Other students, however, find it difficult to learn the accurate English pronunciation. What makes the difference?????? There are four reasons that account for the difference. First and perhaps the most significant reason is the mother tongue1. The closer the student’s own language is to English, the greater the chance of achievement. Secondly, the Learner’s attitude to pronunciation makes the difference. Students who believe in the importance of pronunciation tend to make more progress. Thirdly, the more contact with native speakers of the language has strong positive effects on their learning of pronunciation. Fourthly, and possibly the least important reason is the learner’s own natural ability. Good ears and natural ability to imitate are helpful but they are far less significant than the other three factors. We can’t change the first factor--the mother tongue--but we can control the second and the third factor. Therefore we can make considerable influence over our own progress of learning pronunciation.As for pronunciation teaching, we must first consider what pronunciation is.
