In this paper, we prove that G is either isomorphic to gc1 or to the associated graded conformal algebra of gc1. Furthermore, we prove that the associated graded conformal algebra of gc1 does not have a nontrivial representation on a ?nite C[?]-module, this provides an important example of a ?nitely freely generated simple Lie conformal algebra of linear growth that cannot be embedded into the general conformal algebra gcN for any N. Key words: Filtered conformal algebras; general conformal algebras; Virasoro conformal algebra; cohomology groups  0  Introduction  The notion of conformal algebras, introduced in [14], encodes an axiomatic description of the operator product expansion (or rather its Fourier transform) of chiral ?elds in conformal ?eld theory. Conformal algebras play important roles in quantum ?eld theory and vertex operator algebras, which is also an adequate tool for the study of in?nite-dimensional Lie algebras and associative algebras (and their representations), satisfying the locality property in [15].
