The Christmas stocking 1 Once upon a time there was a poor nobleman who lived with his three daughters in the city of Myrna ([m?:n?] )in what is now Turkey(土耳其). The man’s wife had died leaving her husband to care for their three daughters on his own. The man’s heart had been broken by his wife’s death and his depression was so severe that he was unable to run his household. He gradually fell into poverty and was finally forced to sell his house and land and move into a peasant’s cottage(小屋) where the daughters did their own cooking, sewing and cleaning. 2 In those days, there was a tradition that whenever a woman wanted to marry, her father must give the bridegroom and his family a dowry of money, gifts, and property. The larger the dowry, the better the chance that a young woman would find a good husband. When the poor nobleman’ s daughters become old enough to get married, the man fell into a deep despair because he had nothing to give them. Without a dowry they could not hope to find a husband and they were destined to be sold into slavery(奴隶). 3 In the same town lived a very rich man called Nicholas. He had been brought up as a devout Christian and when his parents died he decided to use his inheritance to help people who were sick, suffering or poor. He was made the Bishop(主教)of Myrna and was known and much loved throughout the land for his generosity to those in need and especially his love for children. 4. One Christmas Eve, as was his custom, Nicholas was silently visiting the houses of the poor making sure that all the children had a gift of some sort. 5. He knew of the nobleman’s despair, so Nicholas decided to pay him a visit but when he arrived at his home the family had already gone to bed. Looking through the window, he noticed that the daughters had left their woollen stockings to dry in front of the fire. He took three bags of gold out of his pocket and tossed them through the open window and each landed in a stocking. The following day wh
