Of all the four essential skills for listening, reading, speaking and writing, reading is an important part in NMET and a vital channel of communication. Cohen states that skillful reading can promote language learning.1 Some people even hold that where theres little reading, there will be little language learning. As we know, reading comprehension is very important to senior middle school students, students’ English reading comprehension often reflects their comprehensive capability to utilize language knowledge, such as the English words, grammar, and text and so on. As society becomes complex and industrialized, reading ability increases in importance. So, its significance is very obvious. In NMET, reading comprehension part takes a proportion of approximate 27%, which will become an important factor influencing the total mark of test participators. Senior middle school students still have many problems in English reading. Due to the significant role reading plays in the NMET and students’ problems in English reading, this paper aims to analyze factors influencing English reading ability of senior middle school students and put forward corresponding strategies.?II. Theoretical Concerns of Reading?A. Nature of Reading?In the recent decades, with significant advancements in anthropology, cognitive psychology, education, linguistics, and sociology, it is possible to extend peoples views on reading.
