Because of its high signal to noise ratio and phase conjugation, Stimulated Brillouin Scattering is applied to the field of ocean exploration, and shows the advantages of this detection method. Threshold of stimulated Brillouin scattering(SBS) is an important parameter，however，its only been a simple definition of the traditional methods but not a clearly defined. Traditional definition of the threshold method is too subjective nature of the obvious, which leads to different definitions when different people do the same experiments.What’s worse, the work of SBS threshold in the sea water has not commenced. Thus, several methods of SBS threshold in measurement were analysed, and select a method which bases on measured attenuation coefficient of stimulated when the laser through the simulation sea water with different salinity. When the narrow band laser throgh the medium,because of its sigal mode,the coefficient attenuation about laser in medium show that it will grow suddenly in some power of laser.When the boadband laser throgh the medium,because of Competition with too many Instantant pluses, the Coefficient of attenuation about laser in medium show that it will not change violently in any power of injet laser.And compear the narrow band coefficient attenuation with the broad band’s,it would be found that the two curves separate since enough laser power injetting..From the changes of attenuation coefficient curve separate, The SBS threshold was determined. In laboratory existing conditions, the simulation seawater threshold of 10‰、 20‰、30‰、35‰、40‰salinity with in the length of 0.8m、1.0m、1.2m、1.6m tanks was tested,and the result was compared with in the pure water’s.
