To activate Students’ background knowledge and introduce ellipsis. Step2 Finding Teacher asks Students compare sentences given and answer the following questions: Q1. What has been left out in sentences (a) and (b)? Q2. Why does the author leave them out? To encourage Students to focus on the ellipsis in the reading passage. 2. Teacher asks Students to scan the passage and find more sentences with ellipsis and invites Students to present . Step3 Analyzing 1. Teacher asks Students to read the sentences given and guides them to analyze the criteria for ellipsis. To encourage Students to analyze the criteria for ellipsis. Step4 Summarizing Teacher leads Students to summarize the criteria for ellipsis: The ellipted word(s) is precisely recoverable; The elliptical construction is grammatically “ defective”; The insertion of the missing word(s) results in a grammatical sentence ( with the same meaning as the original sentence); The missing word(s) is textual recoverable, and is present in the text in exactly the same form. To apply ellipsis in different contexts. 2. Teacher encourages Students to find out what words have been removed before or after the underlined words after getting the main idea of the text in Activity 2 on page 65. 3. Teacher asks Students to remove words from the news report in activity 3 on page 65 to make it more concis
