IntroductionIt is universally acknowledged that Vanity Fair is the masterpiece of William Makepeace Thackeray, also a classic. The story is set at the time of the Napoleonic Wars. The subtitle of the novel points to the author’s intention to portray, not individuals singly, but the whole of the notorious Vanity Fair. Thackeray bestows on English bourgeois and aristocratic more worthy of study than the novel as whole. Becky Sharp Becky and Amelia Sedley are two heroines in Vanity Fair. The author builds the plot upon the contrastive female images of Amelia and Becky to show a picture of the life of the ruling class in England at the beginning of the 19th century. It is they who play leading parts in the novel; it is their contrastive actions and words that knit the novel together. Also it is their same female virtues expose the vices of this society. The author employs the striking contrast between the two heroines to show us what kind of women they are. So I would like take them and analyze their contrastive images and the same female virtues of Amelia and Becky in the society. At the same time, Thackeray is good at analyzing the gloomy inner world. He also pays attention to the relationship between figures and surroundings all around. And he describes the development of characters by changing the environment.II. At the same time, she is also a lucky woman; while Becky is an unkind, sharp, deceptive woman with bad morality.
