As the process of communication is actually a process of conveying meaning in a certain context, pragmatics can be defined as that it is the study of how speakers of a language use sentences to affect successful communication.1But the idea of context is especially important in pragmatics because it gives a lot of contribution to the meaning of utterance.?“Since the beginning of the 1970s, linguists have become increasingly aware of the importance of context. The implications of taking context into account are well expressed by Sadock. There is, then, a serious methodological problem that confronts the advocate of linguistic pragmatics. Given some aspects of what a sentence conveys in a particular context, is that aspect part of what the sentence conveys in virtue of its meaning…or should it be?‘worked out’ on the basis of Gricean principles from the rest of the meaning of the sentence and relevant facts of the context of utterance?”2So what is one’s meaning on a particular occasion depends not only on what is apparently said but also on the aspects of context of its saying.According to the book Modern Linguistic, a sentence can be divided into sentence’s meaning and utterance’s meaning. And sentence’s meaning is abstract, it can exist without context and belong to semantics, but on the other hand, utterance’s meaning is specific and exist depend on context. It is on the basis of sentence’s meaning and is the specific reflection of abstract meaning in a certain context, and it belongs to pragmatics.3 Professor He further divide utterance’s meaning into natural meaning and unnatural meaning in the book Pragmatics and English Learning.
