Background.Lupusnephritis(LN)remainsamajorcauseofmorbidityandend-stagerenaldisease.DysfunctionofBlymphocytes isthoughttobeimportantinthepathogenesisofSLE/LN.IntrarenalBcellshavebeenfoundinseveralformsofin?ammatory kidneydiseasesalthoughtheirroleinLNrenalisnotwellde?ned.Methods.IntrarenalBcellswereanalyzedin192renalbiopsies frompatientsdiagnosedwithlupusnephritis.ImmunohistochemicalstainingofserialsectionswasperformedforeachLNpatient usingCD20,CD3,andCD21antibodies.Results.IntrarenalBcellsweremorelikelytobeassociatedwithclassIVLNandwere mainlydistributedintherenalinterstitium,withveryfewintheglomerulus.Thesystemiclupuserythematosusdiseaseactivity index(SLEDAI),bloodureanitrogen,andserumcreatininelevelswereallsigni?cantlygreaterintheLN-Bcellgroups(allP 0.05).LNrenalactivityandchronicityindicescorrelatedwithB-cellsin?ltrates(allP 0.0001).Renalbiopsieswereclassi?ed intofourdistinctcategoriesaccordingtotheorganizationalgradeofin?ammatorycellin?ltrates.Germinalcenter-(GC-)l
