Analysis of the text What: Mama and Her Bank Account is a short story for extended reading in this unit themed “human and self” with the topic of “parent-child relationship”. Adapted from Kathryn Forbe’s Mama’s bank account, this short story describes the life of a family in San Francisco in the early 1900s. Mama made up a lie about a bank account which didn’t exist at all to help the children get through the hard life and many emergencies. The truth wasn’t told until the children were brought up to be responsible and accomplished adults. Why: With a white lie, Mama used her wisdom of living and educating to show her deep love to her children. After reading, students will be inspired to reflect on their own life. How: The story was written in chronological order. With many dialogues and vivid description of the main characters’ expressions and feelings, the language of the story is easy for students to sort out its plot and summarize the theme. = 2 \* ROMAN II. Analysis of the students First year students in Senior High School are experiencing a delicate parent-child relationship. After learning about the causes and solutions to the conflicts in the former part of this unit, students are able to figure out their relationship better. This short story is another learning moment for them to understand their parents well and begin to appreciate their parents’ wisdom, love and sacrifice. As for this, students may have a lot to say. However, to help them understand the story well, they need to analyze the basic elements of a short story and do further exploring through Reading Circles, due to their lack of reading quantity and capacity, which would be difficult for them. = 3 \* ROMAN III.
