specifically for China, where the English learners may have their own distinct anxiety related toforeign language learning.1.5 Organization of the Present ThesisThis thesis is divided into five chapters.The first chapter is a brief introduction which includes a brief review of the researchbackground,the purpose and the significance of the study.Chapter Two is a literature review that provides theories relevant to the study of anxiety inforeign language learning contexts and a review of previous studies. This chapter moves fromgeneral definitions and theories of anxiety to more specific applications of these theories toforeign language learning situation.Chapter Three delineates the methodology, including research questions, instruments,procedures of survey and experimental study, data collection procedures, data analysisprocedures.Chapter Four is an analysis and discussion of the results.The last chapter is the summary of the major findings of the present study, implicationstogether with the limitations and recommendations of the study for future research.5Chapter Two Literature Review2.1 An OverviewSince anxiety has been identified as one of the best predictors of success in second orforeign language learning (Gardner,1985),numerous researches have been devoted in the pasttwo decades at study the role of foreign language anxiety in foreign language learning. As statedin Chapter One, the main aim of the present study is to explore the role of anxiety in foreignlanguage listening. Therefore, the present researcher will present a literature review first onlistening comprehension research then on the nature of language anxiety, on foreign languageanxiety and last on foreign language listening anxiety.2.2 Studies on Anxiety2.2.1 Definition ofAnxietyThe definition of Anxiety is discussed here. We adopted Horwitz definition on it.According to him, anxiety is the subjective feeling of tension, apprehension, nervousness, andworry associated with an arousal of the autonomic
